“I’m most comfortable when I’m working.”
That statement – from Camano Fire’s next Assistant Chief – is an apt reflection of how Aaron Fields has approached his career in the fire service.
Fields is a 25-year veteran of Seattle Fire and well-known in the fire industry as the founder of Nozzle Forward. As a nationwide educator on fireground tactics, Fields estimates that he’s taught more than 70,000 firefighters nationwide in the past 15 years.
Fields will assume the Assistant Chief role at Camano Fire beginning Aug. 1.
“Aaron inspires people to get involved and work together,” Chief Jason Allen said. “He has a talent for figuring out what’s needed, setting up strong systems, and measuring how well they work—important skills for making sure everything runs smoothly.”
Fields said he looks forward to mentoring firefighters and charting the future of Camano Fire.
“I still love going on runs, but there’s a tactical aspect to the fire scene and growth over the long term,” Fields said. “This type of role, by definition, is a long-term project. As I’ve gotten older in my career and older in life, that has become my interest. I really enjoy operating within a dynamic, capable team.”
Camano Fire’s commitment to community engagement, and the reputation and leadership within the department, were a big part of why Fields said he was drawn to apply for the Assistant Chief position.
“At the end of the day, it’s about people, Fields said. “It’s not the type of call, it’s about the people. I know Chief Allen to be fantastic. We are in alignment with the mission-first approach and giving people resources so they can really excel.”
Chief Allen said that Fields’ experience, leadership, and dedication will make him a great addition to Camano Fire.
“Aaron has a national reputation for improving training programs and I’m confident he’ll help our department grow and succeed,” Chief Allen said.
Fields most recently served as a Lieutenant for Seattle Fire. He is married with two children.
