Open windows let fresh air in, but children – especially toddlers – are at risk of injury from window falls.
Since 2017, more than 130 children in Snohomish County have been injured in preventable window falls.
Window screens are meant to pop out easily in case of fire. That means the weight of a child or toddler can easily push through a window screen and fall.
The good news is that window falls are preventable. Most falls happen to children between two and five years old who are unsupervised.
Here are three simple ways you can keep your children and grandchildren safe around open windows:
- Always supervise young children around open windows
- Install window locks or stops to prevent windows from opening more than 4 inches. You can request free window locks from Safe Kids Snohomish County online
- Move furniture away from windows
