Change your clocks and check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Daylight Saving Time goes into effect at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 10.
It only takes a few minutes to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors each year when you set your clocks ahead. Make a game of it: See how quickly you and your family can find each smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in your home. Or see how long it takes to test each alarm.
Can’t remember the last time you changed the batteries? Swap in a new battery at the same time you test your alarms. We keep extra 9 volt batteries on hand at our Administration Office if you’re short a battery or three. We want to make sure you’re safe.
Can’t remember how old your smoke alarm is? It might be time for a new one. National guidelines recommend replacing smoke alarms every 10 years because the sensors can become less sensitive. The manufacture date should be on the back of the alarm (the part touching the ceiling).
If you’re physically unable to install a smoke alarm, or think you need a new smoke alarm, the Northwest chapter of the American Red Cross can help. All you need to do is fill out their online request form.
Our Camano Fire crews are also able to assist with battery replacements and smoke alarm installation. If you need assistance, call 360-387-1512 or send us an email.
